Supporting the Natural pH of Leather

20th Jan 2016

Tanned leather naturally has an acidic pH.  Exposure to products with a pH dissimilar to leather can damage leather.  This means it is important to care for your fine leather goods, such as your leather jacket, handbags, boots, saddles, and bridles, with specially formulated cleaners and conditioners designed to match the pH of leather.  Many common leather cleaners and saddles soaps on the market are actually alkaline or basic in pH.  Since this is on the opposite side of the pH scale from acidity, many cleaners and saddle soaps will chemically react with the leather when they are applied.  These products, when applied to leather, cause microscopic damage to the leather.  If alkaline products are regularly used, eventually the leather will be noticeably and irreversibly damaged.  Sterling Essentials Leather Cleaner and Leather Conditioner are specially formulated to match the pH of your leather goods in order to prevent premature leather deterioration and to ensure that your favorite leather items will last for years to come.
